What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

Starting physiotherapy can feel like a big step — whether you’re dealing with pain, recovering from injury, or finally addressing a long‑standing concern. Your first appointment sets the foundation for your treatment plan, and knowing what to expect can make the experience smoother, calmer, and more empowering. You don't need a referral to see a physiotherapist; just call up, and we can book you in!

A Warm Welcome and Initial Paperwork

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by your physio or reception team. You may be asked to complete a short intake form on the iPad covering:

  • Your reason for attending

  • Current symptoms

  • Medical history and medications

  • GP details

This helps your physiotherapist understand the basics before you begin.

A Conversation About You

Your physio will start with a detailed discussion about your concerns. This is called the subjective assessment, and it’s one of the most important parts of the session.

Expect questions about:

  • When your symptoms started

  • What makes them better or worse

  • Your work, hobbies, and daily activities

  • Previous injuries or treatments

  • Your goals (pain relief, returning to sport, improving mobility, pelvic health concerns, etc.)

This conversation helps your physio build a clear picture of your condition and the factors influencing it.

A Physical Assessment

Next comes the objective assessment — a hands‑on evaluation tailored to your presentation.

This may include:

  • Movement testing (bending, squatting, lifting, walking)

  • Strength and flexibility checks

  • Joint mobility assessment

  • Pain assessments

  • Neurological testing (if relevant)

Your physio will explain each step before they do anything, ensuring you feel comfortable and informed.

Clear Explanation of Findings

Once the assessment is complete, your physio will talk you through:

  • What they believe is contributing to your symptoms

  • How different structures or movement patterns may be involved

  • What your diagnosis means in practical terms

  • How your condition can improve with treatment

This is your chance to ask questions, clarify anything, and feel confident about the plan moving forward.

Your Personalised Treatment Plan

Treatment often begins in the first session. Depending on your needs, this may include:

  • Hands‑on therapy (massage, mobilisation, release techniques)

  • Exercise prescription

  • Education on posture, movement, or activity modification

  • Pain‑management strategies

  • Advice for home or work

Your physio will outline how many sessions they expect you’ll need and what progress typically looks like.

How to Prepare for Your First Appointment

To make the most of your session:

  • Wear comfortable clothing you can move in

  • Bring any relevant scans or reports

  • Arrive a few minutes early

  • Think about your goals — what do you want to be able to do again?

Final Thoughts

Your first physiotherapy appointment is all about understanding your body, your goals, and the best pathway forward. It’s normal to feel a little nervous, but by the end of the session most people feel relieved, informed, and optimistic.

If you’re ready to start your journey toward better movement and less pain, we’re here to help.
